5 SIGNS YOU MAY NEED A FALL DETOX

Fall is one of the best Seasons of the year (Spring being the second best) to think about detoxing your body, especially if your summer was particularly indulgent with barbecues or perhaps a lobster-roll overdose.

You are a wise and Ageless Goddess. Your body is wise too and it thrives on being balanced. On the physical level, your cells need to operate at a 7.365 pH level in order to achieve optimal health (i.e. pain-free life).

The 4 main routes that the body eliminates toxins is through the digestive system (through the liver and bowels), skin (through sweating), lungs (through breathing), and the urinary system (through the urine). In order to best support detox, all of these systems should be emphasized at the same time.

Whatever may ail you as the summer season comes to an end, take note of these 5 signs that your body needs to hit that reset button.

1. Bloating
Just one of the tell-tale signs that you need to detox. In fact, if you experience any digestive issues at all, you more than likely may want to try a cleanse. Things like not chewing your food well, eating too quickly, , too much sugar or fat in your diet, as well as processed foods means indigestion and bloating. Our stomach is the center of our health, and if everything is working properly, you will have more energy, feel more vibrant, and be able to absorb nutrients and enzymes from our food efficiently. As a Naturopath, I often suggest a probiotic to help detox and heal the gut…. the one I take daily myself.

2.  Dry and Dull Skin
What if I told you that your moisturizer isn’t the primary reason for dry, flaky skin…if there’s too much toxicity and  your cells are inflamed, nutrients are not getting to your skin, the last stop for nutrient delivery in the body.  Your skin looks dull and feels dry. To help boost the circulation to the skin, the lymphatic system needs a huge boost. I highly recommend a lymphatic drainage by a qualified massage therapist. It’s a fantastic way to flush out toxins and get things moving along.

And let’s not forget about water. Most people should be drinking at least 1-1.5 litres every day. Not only is water hydrating for the skin but also a good way to cleanse the kidneys by peeing often. During a detox, it is important to fill up (and empty) your bladder more: if your urine is bright yellow it’s an easy sign that you need to boost your water intake.

3. Mood swings or just plain irritability
If this describes you, then you are most probably suffering from a hormonal imbalance and inflammation brought on by stress. And stress itself produces toxins. In fact, Stress is the number #1 cause of inflammation.

Regular mood swings and irritability means it’s time to consider a Fall detox. It is important to manage your stress and busy life. Know that you can bring your body back to balance. Try deep breathing and meditation for just 5 minutes a day. Make a conscious effort to breathe slowly and deeply, so that your abdomen expands with every breath. Deep breathing exercises have been scientifically proven to help improve mood, reduce pain, increase energy, and keep your lungs healthier.

I also suggest soaking in a warm tub filled with Epsom salts (two huge scoops) for 20 minutes , minimum twice a week. The magnesium in the salts helps to remove toxins from the body and can calm you down as well, helping you get an even better night’s sleep.

4. Sugar Cravings
A detox is about eliminating unhealthy behaviors as well as toxins. If you’re craving a soda, chocolate, or a donut daily, you are most likely deficient in 4 essential nutrients—sulfur, tryptophan, chromium, and phosphorous. You know what I mean if you are experiencing a brief energy burst followed by an inevitable crash. And sugar can be extremely habit forming and addicting. Here are 9 amazingly effective Ways to Detox from Sugar.

5. Your eyes are puffy and baggy
Puffy and baggy eyes are not just from salty snacks or one too many drinks the night before. They can be a symptom of toxicity, when the liver and kidney are overloaded. You can support both these organs with herbs such as dandelion or milk thistle. Take tinctures or sip dandelion or milk thistle teas every morning for 2 weeks straight, but ALWAYS consult with your healthcare practitioner first, and especially if you are taking medications. ..You can also try this liver detox juice to get you started.

Fall, a time when all the leaves from the trees transform into multi-colored works of art and fall away. It also represents, however, a beautiful cycle of loss, regeneration and regrowth once the spring season comes around.

To all women, everywhere… sending you love, light, and healing.

Until next time…
